Atalanta and Viasat Demonstrate Improved Resilience of Satellite Network Against Modern Warfare Threats

As satellite communications face record levels of attack, Argo proves these systems can be made more resilient, saving lives.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Atalanta, a mathematical AI company, has partnered with Viasat, a global satellite communications company, to prove that enhancements to Viasat’s geostationary satellite technology provide increased resiliency to jamming attacks under hostile conditions. For years, Viasat has continuously invested in hardening its network against interference, yet the benefits of these enhancements have historically been difficult to show. Atalanta’s Argo platform makes it possible to both validate and demonstrate that progress.

Electronic warfare is one of the most consequential domains of modern conflict, an invisible battlespace fought across the electromagnetic spectrum with effects that are immediate, cascading, and even irreversible by the time they are detected. Satellite jamming sits at the central axis of this threat, where deliberate radio frequency signals are broadcast to overpower, block, or disrupt legitimate satellite communications.

In recent years, satellite jamming has become a near-daily occurrence in regions like Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Southeast Asia. If adversaries can switch critical communications infrastructure off through offensive actions, they do more than disrupt networks; they suspend the conditions under which modern societies function. Militarily, this can undermine critical coordination and command systems. Civically, it can isolate populations and suppress the flow of information before international awareness fully develops, all without firing a single physical weapon.

Argo was built to address this challenge directly. Using Argo, Viasat teams were able to formally verify that improvements made to communications links satisfied required operational thresholds under contested conditions, including interference and adversarial jamming. Argo modeled the SATCOM system mathematically and continuously re-validated whether the system could maintain reliable communications as requirements and adversarial conditions changed.

This matters because mission-critical communications systems must operate under constantly evolving threats, yet system performance under contested scenarios is often not well-understood or measured by end users. By continuously verifying system behavior against evolving requirements and real-world threats, Argo enables mission owners to maintain greater confidence that critical systems will perform as intended under contested environments. As communications infrastructure becomes increasingly software-defined and geopolitical conflicts grow more complex, the ability to formally validate resilience before deployment represents a fundamental advancement in both systems engineering and the acquisition of mission-critical capabilities.

The scale of this challenge continues to grow. Civil aviation data shows a 220% increase in GPS signal loss events from 2021 to 2024 and 430,000 interference incidents over conflict zones in 2024 alone, a 62% jump from the previous year.1 “Closing the software understanding gap can help mitigate this urgent risk,” said Anjana Rajan, CEO and Co-Founder of Atalanta. “Much of the critical infrastructure modern society depends on was built decades ago and is assumed not to be able to withstand today’s threats.
